About > Mid Canterbury Area

Ashburton – Mid Canterbury: the commercial centre of one of New Zealand’s richest agricultural and pastoral regions, is approximately one hours drive south from Christchurch. Developed on both sides of the Ashburton River, the town has a population of just under 18,000.

The Ashburton area was first surveyed in 1848 and the river, known to the Maori as Hakatere, was renamed Ashburton in honour of Hon Thomas Baring, later Baron of Ashburton. The town which grew at the crossing point on the river adopted the same name, and is now a thriving commercial centre.

Ashburton township has a large hotel complex “Hotel Ashburton” that has developed a reputation as an excellent accommodation and conference facility. There are also several motel complexes in the town, and camping grounds. The attractive town centre, well planned and tended parks and gardens, including an outstanding domain, which covers 40 hectares (50 acres) are features of the town.

The Ashburton-Mid Canterbury area is one of the most diverse farming areas in the country with sheep, deer and dairy farms, coupled with grain and seed production units, creating a ‘patchwork-like’ pattern from the mountain to the sea.
The salmon that runs in the Ashburton, Rangitata and Rakaia rivers, are world renowned, while the back country provides climbing and deerstalking with fishing and boating on the numerous lakes that dot this back country landscape and ski-ing at the world renowned Mt Hutt ski field situated close to the alpine Methven township is not to be missed.
The town Ashburton, which grew at the crossing point on the river, adopted the same name, and is now a thriving commercial centre.
